Abstinence makes the heart grow fonder…

Well, I’ve been a bit lazy of late and have not posted for some time.  So, without further ado, here are some thoughts on recent (and not so recent) events.
First off, don’t buy a house that sits below sea level.  In the early 20th century Galveston Texas suffered one of the worst natural weather related disasters (yep, a hurricane) that killed 6000 people and destroyed the city.  Now that particular location was above sea level (barely) and should have been a fairly good example of what can happen when only 4 feet separate your house from the level of the ocean.  As usual, the human race in its infinite wisdom continued on regardless in the firm belief that as a superior being we can scoff at mother nature and build what we want where we want with utter impunity.   I beg to differ.  The stupid gene strikes again.
Insulating foam.  No, not the stuff you put in the roof space, the stuff they glue on the fuel tanks of the shuttle.  Pieces still fall off at take off, and NASA still can’t fix the problem.  Oh well, we still have non-stick frying pans so what the hell.
In a related story (thin, very thin) a certain ex astronaut suggested a trip to Mars would be easier than the original trip to the Moon.  See above for one reason he is full of shit.  Added to the foam issue, the trip would take a lot longer.  I mea a LOT longer.  Months to be exact, not days.  In addition, the fuel and supplies needed to make the trip would have to be put in orbit PRIOR to setting off on our merry way, and since the shuttle is nearing the end of its useful life and we still don’t have a replacement, we would need to design and build a new ship just for the trip.  I could go on but I think you get the picture.
Roe Vs. Wade and Roberts.  This guy (a self confessed Catholic – pun intended) is about to be confirmed to the highest court in the land (assuming God hold the top slot).  He won’t answer questions on specifics like abortion and a few other contentious subjects, and is being what I would describe as evasive, to put it mildly.  If you have read my previous posts, you already know what I think about religion and its adverse effects on society, but this is once scary MF that is almost definitely going to attempt to overturn this ruling at some point in his career.  The unfortunate aspect of the whole hearing process is that it will fail miserably in preventing a religious self rightious ass from becoming a very powerful figure in the US court.  I feel sorry for all the women throughout history that have fought long and hard for their rights only to have them crushed by a god fearing moron who obviously has little or no understanding of what they had to go through to get this far.
It seems certain ethnic group are a little less than pleased with the FEMA and government response to the problems in the south caused by the recent hurricane.  For all those people that decided to stay instead of leaving as you were warned/told/advised/ordered or any other euphamism you want to use, you cannot blame anyone else for the problems you are currently experiencing.  I do however sympathize with the predicament facing the thousands of people affected by this tragedy of epic proportions.  Don’t, however, tell me you did not see it coming.
The war in Iraq continues.  All those who are surprised, raise your hands.  I thought so.  You can’t fight an idea.  The Romans tried that and they all ended up as Christians, no matter how many they fed to the lions.  There were obviously not enough lions, and the ones they had were well fed, in some cases ignoring the human buffet placed before them and leaving the soldiers to execute the Christians themselves, which as you can imagine can be quite tiring and eventually boring.  If you can’t fight them, join them.  Unfortunately this resulted in the Catholic religion.  They should have bred more lions.  So, the point here is that the Muslim religion, like Catholicism, is an idea, not a very good one, but a lot of people like the idea.  I’m not saying we should join them, but we should leave them to their own devices.  Most Muslim nations have done a perfectly good job of fighting each other, killing each other because some of them have a different variation of the same idea, and basically keeping the majority of themselves poorly educated, poverty stricken, and feudal.  Why try to change that?  We really don’t need to be wasting lives and money fighting a bad idea.  It’s not a good idea to do that.  However, if we bred enough lions……  Do you think they would show that on HBO?
The Pres has the lowest approval ratings ever.  And he never got a blow job in the Oval office either.  It sucks to be George Bush (yep, pun intended).
The FEMA director resigned.  The man could not direct traffic let alone an organization like FEMA.  Maybe I should apply for the job.  Maybe I should run for president.  OK, maybe not, but I like the idea of being able to tell Roberts to fuck off.
More important humanitarian and political commentary tomorrow, assuming God or Allah has not struck me down.  The chances are slim to none, so I will see you all then.
